Velocity ratio = distance effort / distance load

having a low velocity ratio is good in the case of gears since then the smaller gear will go a lot faster

but whats the advantage of having a high velocity ratio? why would you want the effort to move more then the load ?

  1. Because it gives you more force.

Examples: Gear trains for almost any motor or engine. Car/truck transmission and differential take fast engine, use it to drive wheels slowly for lots of force to go uphill. Steering gearing.

    Any jack.

  2. High VR like a worm gear gives ability to control movement while preventing gravitational runaway movement .  IE the s***w type jack on your car.
