Velocity distribution of a wing?

Question

In quite simple terms, how come the velocity on the upper side of a wing is faster than the bottom. I know that it hasn't got to do with the path distance.

Since you 'know' it hasn't got to do with path distance, maybe you'd like to explain how it happens that whenever a wing is lifting, the distance from the stagnation point to the trailing edge is greater over the top than bottom of the wing, regardless of the shape.
