You are trying to find out how high you have

to pitch a water balloon in order for it to burst

when it hits the ground. You discover that

the balloon bursts when you have pitched it

to a height of 18 m.The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .

With what velocity did the balloon hit the

ground? Answer in units of m/s

  1. edit: sara

    Since velocity is a vector, try v=-18.78 j (m/s)

    time to maximum height

    s=(1/2)*g*t^2

    solve for t

    t=sqr((2*18)/9.8) = 1.9166 s "to 18 m"

    1.9166 seconds up or down.

    With what velocity did the balloon hit the

    ground?

    v=g*t=-9.8*1.9166

    = -18.78 j (m/s) "answer"

    edit:

    "You discover that the balloon bursts when you have pitched it to a height of 18m" At 18 meters the balloon has maximum height and zero velocity by your given. We are

    assuming that only the force of gravity is acting.
