  1. i used to build model rockets as a kid and i liked the estes brand ones the best, some were easy some were hard to build but they were all fun. i suggest  a starter kit with a launch pad, engines, launcher, etc. they usually come with everything in the box. have fun. just type estes rockets into any search engine or check out this site:

  2. First, consider your local hobby shop, if you have one, for a couple of reasons:  You'll get your hands on what you need faster, and you'll help keep them in business, which is a great thing for the hobby in general.

If your LHS is disappointing (or you don't have one), then your best bets for low-power rocket parts (those that will take up to E impulse motors) would be:

    SEMROC http://www.semroc.com

    FlisKits http://www.fliskits.com

    Apogee Components http://www.apogeerockets.com

If you're looking for mid-power (F and G impulse) or high-power (H impulse and above) parts and kits, consider using parts from LOC Precision.  Check out:

    Discount Rocketry http://www.discountrocketry.com

    Commonwealth Displays http://www.commonwealth.net/rocketstore/

You should also consider joining one of the following forums for info and advice on building your rocket, especially if it's your first time:

    The Rocketry Forum http://www.rocketryforum.com

    Rocketry Planet http://www.rocketryplanet.com

For more info on construction techniques and rocket performance in general, probably the best site is Info-Central at http://www.info-central.org .

Finally, to help you find a place to launch your rocket and to do it safely, I'd strongly urge you to join either the NAR (National Association of Rocketry) or Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA), who will help you find a nearby club with the range and equipment to get your project into the air.

    NAR:  http://www.nar.org

    TRA:  http://www.tripoli.org

Best of luck, FLY SAFELY, and enjoy!
