  1. 1. Transportation of goods - traffic jams on the Grand Canal in the early morning rush hours are because of all the delivery boats (some big enough to carry 900 cubic feet of goods).

    2. Transportation of people - Venice had nearly 14 million visitors in 2007. I dare say more than half of the tourists use the water bus (vaporetto) to get around the city... and to enjoy the sights too.

    3. Tap water - does not come from the canals but from fresh water sources... Venice probably has one of the best taps waters in the country. The water is constantly tested.... and tasted. 100xs Better than bottled.

    4. Sports - there are sailing and rowing clubs in Venice. Some of the biggest events of the year are the rowing events... and some even get national TV coverage.

    5. High & low tides - keep the canals somewhat clean. With every low tide the city virtually gets "flushed" (into the Adriatic Sea).

    6. The lagoon - there are parts of Venice that are still uncontaminated... and where fishing is authorized. Crabs, sea bass, cuttle fish.... there some good fishing. Moreover the area is a beautiful and has been painted throughout the centuries by some of the most important artists of all times.
