  1. In a three day weekend, you can cover a lot of territory in Italy. It's even possible to go to Vienna, Munich, Salzburg, Paris, ... for a short break using the trains (I take the night trains and sleep on the way. With only a month here though, you should explore Italy first though.

This is the train website in English; you can check specific schedules and prices: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html Udine is 1 hr 27 min to 2 hr 20 min by train from Venice depending on the specific train. I enjoyed it there when I visited.

Other good places near Venice: Padova, Verona, Treviso, Ferrara, Vicenza, Ravenna. If you've never been before, you should go to Florence and Rome for two of the weekends while you're here. With a three day weekend, places like Perugia, Siena, Cinque Terre, Pisa/Lucca are possible. If you're here in September, go see the living Chess in Marostica. http://www.marosticascacchi.it/a_2_EN_9_... There are lots of interesting local festivals throughout the year. Check for other events if you're interested in that kind of thing: http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht...

  2. Hi. I live in Venice. You have just received some good ideas. I also suggest you other places, in particular near Venice you can   do this tour:

Padova, Vicenza, Verona, Lago di Garda (Sirmione is beautiful!!!), Treviso.

By train you can be in Florenz in about 2 hours...it's beautiful!

If you like mountains you can go to Merano....
