  1. Whether it's worth it depends on what you're looking for. It can be cold and damp, but there are typically some pretty nice days in December too. Piazza San Marco in the early morning fog when it's nearly empty is nice - you can get some good photos of St Marks and the other landmarks. I live a couple of hours away and always make it a point to go into Venice for some shopping and to see the exhibit of Preseppi (nativity scenes). The exhibit at the Arena in Verona is much larger, but the one in Venice is pretty nice. The Christmas market in Campo San Stefano is small, but nice. It's nothing like the one's in Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna, or some other cities though. Bolzano and Trento both have very nice Christmas markets here. The museums and galleries are all open and there aren't the huge masses of tourists, so it's pretty easy to get around. There are a lot of Christmas concerts around the city. One of my Italian friends went to the New Year's celebration this year and wasn't overly impressed, but he's been to Rome and Times Square in the last few years.
