I spent three of the most wonderful days of my life in Venice.  There is nothing like it. I was there in 1988.  I've heard stories that it was dirty, but that was not the case, at all.  It's amazing to be in a place without any motorized vehicles, surrounded by water, where you take a boat to get to neighboring places.  The quiet strikes you right away, and at first it seems a little aerie.  Soon, you realize that your just not accustomed to the silence.  There are wonderful restaurants and many exhibitions to see.  It is very touristy, but it's one of the best places I've ever vacationed.
