Venus Williams and Serena Williams of USA came back after dropping the opening set to beat their countrywomen, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the semi-finals of the ladies doubles event at the Wimbledon Championships
on Friday.
The Williams Sisters took an hour and 38 minutes to upset the top seeds in a close contest.
Venus and Serena are bidding to capture their fifth Wimbledon doubles crown. Their four previous doubles title came in 2000, 2002, 2008-09.
Coming back to their latest match, Huber and Raymond drew the first blood by breaking the sisters in the second game to move ahead 2-0. Venus and Serena struck back in the third to reduce the trail to 1-2 but they lost their serve
again to trail 1-3. Serving to stay in the set at 2-5, the Williamses failed to hold and went down 2-6.
After losing the opener pretty badly, Venus and Serena started the second set with an attacking approach. They snatched a break in the very first game and won their following serve to attain a 2-0 lead. The Williams sisters hit
a couple of more blows in the fifth and seventh to clinch it 6-1.
Venus and Serena carried the winning momentum into the decider, as they captured first three games to open up a 3-0 lead. They broke Huber and Raymond again in the eighth game to close it 6-2.
Serena is also in the final of the singles event, where she will face Poland’s world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska on Saturday.
Talking to the reporters after the doubles match, she said, "It would be good to have a day off but also it's good to practice in doubles because I get a lot of match play, practice some returns, some serves."
Serena could not feature in many tournaments due to different health problems in the last couple of years. She said, "I just wanted to make it through everything that I was going through and become a survivor. I've been able to
do that. I've been through so much in the past year or two years, it's been unbelievable. If you just keep [believing], you can do it."
Serena’s opponent in the singles final, Radwanska, missed her pre match conference due to illness. When Williams was asked to comment on this, she replied, “No, she’s definitely resting up for tomorrow. She’s looking good and getting
ready.”
The younger one of the two champion sisters, Serena, is aiming for her fifth singles title at the Wimbledon Championships.
