Venus Williams aims to perform well in mixed doubles in 2011
The American tennis ace Venus Williams, who was cut short for the rest of the season three months ago as a result of her knee injury, has clear cut targets for 2011 with a mixed doubles success her utmost priority.
The right handed player from the United States of America has so far grabbed a total of twenty one Grand Slam crowns in her career. However, she still requires two more single titles and two more mixed trophies to complete the full set of three in each of
the four Grand Slams.
"The one thing that seems elusive for me is the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon and the United States Open. I have gotten close to winning the singles at the Australian Open and the French Open so I feel like that is within my reach. However, the mixed,
that is going to be the tough part”, reflected the seven time major singles winner on Thursday.
Currently ranked number five in the South African Airways WTA list, Venus Williams injured her knee after the US Open back in August where she was ousted in the final four stage at the hands of ultimate winner, Kim Clijsters.
She has so far won the mixed doubles title at the French Open as well as Australian Open. The stylish America, however, has never made her way into the mixed final at the United States Open. Venus along with Bob Bryan did reach the title battle at the grass
court Grand Slam event once back in 2006 where they ended up as runner up.
While commenting on her current form, Williams declared, "It is almost impossible to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles at one grand slam and I would love to hold all three titles at all of the majors. I have been getting back to my championship form,
slowly however surely. I will be smashing balls quite soon. I have been getting better and doing all the best to get set for 2011. It is hard being on the sidelines however it is also encouraging as I will come back with a new fire”.
The Florida resident, who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 1994, achieved her career high ranking of World number one back in 2002. She officially ended her 2010 year when she pulled out of the China Open, which also automatically ruled her out of
the Fed Cup final between Italy and United States.
Williams, however has since been working really hard in rehabilitation to get ready for her 2011 campaign.
She has not watched a single tennis match on television since her year ended. Although, the right hander was tempted to monitor this month's Fed Cup title battle in San Diego, where the Italian side won 3-1 in the end.
Venus who captured a gold medal at the Olympic Games back in 2000 has also set her eyes on the London Olympics where she along with her sister Serena Williams will defend the women's doubles trophy they previously won in Beijing.
While talking to the media on Thursday, the 1.85 meters tall Venus said that she and her younger sister Serena Williams will have to be play at their best in order to live up to every one’s expectations in London.
The William sisters from the United States of America also took the women's doubles crown at the Sydney Olympics back in 2000 where Venus had her first taste of the showpiece competition in global sport.
