Venus Williams beats Chanelle Scheepers in round two - Southern and Western Open 2012
World number 64, Venus Williams, got her act right and pulled back a match against the 40th ranked South African, Chanelle Scheepers. She lost the opening set 2-6 but bounced back to win the following two 6-3, 6-2 in
a battle of an hour and 46 minutes to reach the third round of Southern and Western Open.
Williams commented afterwards, "She's one of those players who puts a lot of balls in the court and makes you play a lot of shots - I wasn't getting them in the court in the first set, but it was good to turn it around. I don't
think I was at my quickest today, but I still cover a lot of court. I'm feeling good going into tomorrow."
The opening set witnessed a cool start form both players before the South African picked up the momentum; gobbled up two consecutive breakthroughs and won the opening set in quick succession. Williams looked a bit out of her socks
and couldn’t handle the onslaught of her rival.
However, the comeback in the second set was much like the old Williams in action. She rocked the show with a breakthrough in the second game and took a resounding lead of 5-1 with the help of another breakpoint.
She was on course to register a breadstick but a timely comeback from the South African superstar allowed her to win two more games courtesy a breakpoint. However, it didn’t stop the American superstar from taking the set away.
The final set witnessed a series of breakpoints but not before both players started off with a serve hold. Three breakpoints were contested succession and that went in favour of Williams with the ratio of 2:1. She led the scores
3-2 at that stage.
Williams held her serve in the following game and gobbled up the third breakpoint of the set that helped her to build a stupendous lead of 5-2 ahead of her opponent. She lost just one point on her final serve and won the match.
Venus Williams takes on the likes of the 10th seed Italian superstar, Sara Errani, who lost to her in the opening round London Olympics, just a couple of weeks ago.
