Venus Williams en route to rise and shine again – Tennis Special
Former world number one, Venus Williams, is bidding to find her old momentum again this circuit. She has already secured three quarter-final berths and is consistently climbing at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings.
The American veteran is recreating her 2002 magic this season. After ruling out for almost a whole year at the professional tennis due to illness, she started her campaign standing at the world number 124 in the Sony Ericsson Open
in March. She carried her rhythm in the proceeding tournaments and climbed to the world number 52 before entering her first Grand Slam in Paris since the US Open last season.
"With my ranking now, I'll definitely get in next year," Williams was quoted after losing her second round match at the Roland Garros. "This is just the beginning for me. This is a process I have to learn from - working with myself,
my doctors and everything. I have to be positive. This is really the beginning for me again. In two months I could have a major breakthrough and be back to my old self."
The 31-year-old made a spectacular comeback at the Miami WTA Premier event and crushed Kimiko Date Krumm with a bagel in her opening round match. She continued displaying exceptional skills and went on to upset third seeded Petra
Kvitova and 15th seeded Ana Ivanovic en route to the final eight. Despite bowing out to Agnieszka Radwanska, she made another impressive run at the Family Circle Cup in the first week of April.
Williams slew her fellow former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, with a bagel en route to another final eight appearance. She also tumbled over Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova before edging out by second seeded Samantha Stosur.
This was her first clay court tournament since French Open 2010.
The ecstatic American failed to adjust on the blue clay courts of the Mutua Madrid Open but managed to outmuscle the Romanian number one, Simona Halep, in her first round match. Regardless of losing in her proceeding match against
12th seeded Angelique Kerber, she re-ignited her spark in the follow-up WTA Premier Event in Rome.
The jubilant veteran stomped over Halep again in her opening round clash at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia. She then devastated Ekaterina Makarova with a breadstick before avenging her loss against Stosur in the pre-quarters round.
Williams fell at the hands of the world number two Maria Sharapova in the last eight but raised from 63rd rank to the world number 52.
Entering the Roland Garros after two years, the American Icon bounced from a set down to overpower Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea in three sets to progress. She failed to triumph over the world number three, Radwanska, in the round
of 64 but enjoyed a successful clay court comeback season.
Seeking for her old rhythm, Williams is now looking forward to reclaim her glory at the Wimbledon Championships, third of the four Grand Slam event held in London.
