Venus Williams eyeing Olympics participation – Tennis News
Former world number one, Venus Williams, is very excited to take part in the Olympics, scheduled to be contested in London, later this year. For that she has to raise her ranking and break into the Top-64 players of the world to
have a direct entry. The final list of the participants will be prepared in the end of June. There is still a lot of time left to save points and climb several ranks.
It is just not the gold medal that has boosted the morale of the American, it is also about collecting the Olympic pins as well as souvenirs that are always a special moment in any players history. She has won three gold medals
in the previous editions of this tournament and looks to have another shot at them.
This is what she had to say about the Olympics campaign, “My goal is to peak for the Olympics. When I don't want to get up or, you know, I want to do something different, then I think about the Olympics and how if I don't do the
right thing I might not be there. That keeps me on the straight and narrow."
She further added, “It's just the ultimate level in sports. It's about participating. It's about having that experience. It's about having the honour to be good enough to be there. It's just, you know, the pinnacle of sports.”
Williams made her comeback in Miami, earlier this month having fought the chronic disease of Sjogren's syndrome for almost three-fourths of a year. She played her last match in the US Open 2011 and then she contested in the Sony
Ericsson Open 2012.
Her performance in Miami was pretty satisfactory; made it to the quarter-finals of the tournament before falling at the hands of the reigning champion, Agnieszka Radwanska. She dumped the likes of third seed, Petra Kvitova, and
Serb former world number one, Ana Ivanovic.
Up next for the American tennis ace is the tournament in Charleston, Family Circle Cup. She will look to make an impact and drown her opponents so that she can help grab few points that will enable her jump few spots in the rankings.
It is a crucial stage of the year and Williams has to make sure she reach the advanced stages of the tournaments in order to fulfil her dream of playing London Olympics that are scheduled in August 2012.
