Venus Williams eyeing another gold medal in Olympics 2012 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Venus Williams, looks to be in a better form in the French Open having dispatched the first round competitor, Paula Ormaechea, in three sets. However, her ultimate goal is not to be the Grand Slam champion
but to rule the world in the field of Olympics, coming later this year.
She stated, "It's a huge accomplishment just to be here. The biggest challenge was to learn how to live with it and that the key is to be here and to try my best right now. Sometimes I think is this all my fault. Did I do something
wrong to cause it?” She slipped to world number 134 after inflicting a chronic disease in the US Open last year. She missed all competitions and came back in the Federation Cup match this February.
She has still not recovered completely from the disease but feels a lot better. She reached the quarter-final stages of Miami and Charleston and impressed in Rome as well; defeating the likes of Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur.
It’s been a tipsy turvy season for her so far but the improvement is clearly visible especially coming back after a major illness and still maintaining a respectable ranking of world number 53 at the age of 31 is a massive achievement for the American.
Her commitment was visible in Paris on Sunday when she bounced back a set down to oust her rival in three sets. It takes a lot of courage and power to fight for this long having lost a lot of stamina in the rehabilitation process
due to lack of diet and continuous practice.
Williams has already won Olympics back in 2000; winning the singles gold medal but she wants to add gold to her tally that will accomplish her career ending dream. She smiled and stated, “My main goal is the Olympics. If I reach
that then I will be home free — you might not see me again. I would love to play doubles here with Serena but my goal was to peak in singles for the Olympics. All of my energies are towards that."
Rankings at the end of Roland Garros French Open will decide the final line-up for Olympics and Top-64 players will receive a direct entry. She can easily remain amongst the prescribed list of Top-64 players because she has no
points to defend from the last year clay court Grand Slam as she was ill and didn’t take part. Let’s see if she can accomplish her goal.
