Venus Williams full of spirit ahead of US Open despite disease attack and back pain – Tennis News
Former world number one, Venus Williams, is battling the disease of Sjogren's Syndrome and back pain at the same time but is still not backing out from the fourth Grand Slam Championship of the season, the US Open. She has set
new standards of commitment and willpower for the young guns.
Players these days pull out of the competition on the slightest of injuries and don’t try to play through pain. The hunger to strive for success has definitely seen a major slump when a contender is injured. However, the seven-time
Grand Slam Champion, Williams, will battle it out at the hard courts of the New York in the hunt to clinch a Major title glory at the age of 32.
Commenting about the recent hurdles she faced, Williams said, “Last year was a definitely a tough year. I've come a long way. It's great to be back and feeling a lot better. Last summer everything was so hard. I didn't understand
why. Every day I just wanted to quit at practice. I would tell myself, 'Maybe tomorrow I'll feel better. Just keep going.' It was very difficult.”
She further added, “This year when I practice, I don't want to quit. It's a huge difference. I've come a long way thanks to my doctors and everything else. It's great. I played my best tennis of the year at the Olympics."
The American wildcard entrant, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, will be the first round opponent for Williams. So, it will be a good contest between the two compatriots. However, the fighting spirit of the 47th ranked American
will definitely give an edge over Sands who is yet to stamp her authority in the singles category this season.
Williams has proved it so often that she can be a surprise package for anyone and she is out there to mark her authority at the tennis courts. She will never back down from any challenge and fight until the last bit of energy.
She has challenged herself to beat the disease as well as those contenders who will come in her way. Maybe the spirit of Williams will help her reign supreme over everyone.
