Venus Williams makes a direct entry to London Olympics – Tennis News
Former world number one, Venus Williams, has comfortably managed to clear the cut-off rankings for the direct entry in the upcoming London Olympics in the last week of July. She will be participating in that event and hunting down
her fourth gold medal. She started the year as world number 134 and was afraid of losing a spot in the Olympics but her recent performances has helped her to reach the 47th rank in the world which is well clear off the cut-off of Top-64 players
put forth by the Olympics officials.
Talking about the participation in Olympics, she mentioned, “The Olympics is just the ultimate in sports. I grew up watching those documentaries. My dad had us watch those. It was his dream for us to play there. Once I got a taste
of it, it was just amazing. Every time I leave the Olympics, I go through withdrawals. It's the pinnacle of sports. I love it there."
Williams won her first singles gold medal in the 2000 edition of the Olympics. She won the doubles gold medal in the same year; teaming up with her sister, Serena Williams. Both the sisters were invincible during those days and
beating them was equal to winning a Grand Slam Championship title. Both sisters teamed up again in Beijing and grabbed their second doubles gold medal in 2008. It was the last edition of the Olympics and now they are back in 2012. Venus might not be in her
prolific run of form and have lost quite a lot of pace on her serves but her willpower to succeed in the field of Wimbledon, London during this year’s edition of Olympics is sky-rocketing.
Other Americans that will feature in the Olympics include the likes of Venus’s sister, Serena Williams, who is ranked sixth in the world. Christiana McHale is ranked 29 in the world so she will be the third representative from
America and Varvara Lepchenko who recently got a U.S citizenship rounds off the four representatives from United States of America. It is a good mix of old talent with young guns. So, the possibility of America gaining a gold medal in tennis is on the cards.
