Venus Williams makes an epic comeback at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 – Tennis Special
Former world number one, Venus Williams made a superb comeback at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 after resting for almost seven months due to illness. She cruised to the quarter-finals at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) hard court event taking place in
Miami, Florida.
Williams, who last played at the US Open in late August 2011, stormed into the Miami WTA event standing at world number 134. She flashed her old self here and crushed the Japanese veteran, Kimiko Date-Krumm with a bagel in her opening round match.
The 31-year-old carried her rhythm in the next round and stunned the world number three, Petra Kvitova, in a three set nail-biter to advance at this event.
The American veteran kept her spark lit and after outfoxing blooming Canadian star Aleksandra Wozniak in three sets, she set-up a date with the 15th seed, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Williams lost the opener against the Serbian number one but sought
her rhythm after that, ultimately formulating a three setter victory to secure a place in the final eight.
Her impressive run of form was halted by the world number four, Agnieszka Radwanska, with a breadstick. The American played well but was eventually edged out by Radwanska with a 4-6, 1-6 shock.
Williams spectacular run at the Sony Ericsson Open saw her cracking back at the top-100 of the WTA rankings.
The American commented after her loss at this WTA Premier Mandatory event, "I'm disappointed, but it's been a great tournament. I think I learned a lot from this tournament in terms of how to prepare and what works. I just have to be there mentally every
day. But I could have had this result on Day 1."
Currently ranked 87th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Williams, is playing as a wild card entrant at the Family Circle Cup, a WTA clay court event held in Charleston, South Carolina.
She trashed the Czech qualifier, Iveta Benesova, in the opening round at this green clay court event.
"Miami was definitely a whirlwind," Williams was quoted about her experience at Crandon Park after tumbling over Benesova in her opening round match in Charleston. "All the points were going so fast, and I was just living in the moment, and a lot of the
times I ended up the victor at the end of these matches and didn't really know how it happened."
Williams, who is bidding for her 44th WTA career title here, will square off against the seventh seed, Jelena Jankovic, in the second round at the Family Circle Tennis Center.
The Lynwood native needs to lift her game in order to outclass top five players. She needs to manipulate a better first serve share and improve her defensive skills in order to overcome her rivals. Williams also need to cash in more of her break chances
to ease pass her top class opponents.
