Venus Williams making a comeback in the Fed Cup tie this weekend – Tennis News
Yet another comeback announced from the former world number one, Venus Williams, who is thrilled to play the Fed Cup tie against Belarus this weekend. Seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus has been sidelined from professional tennis
for the most parts of last year due to persistent illness but she believes she will be available for Team America in the Fed Cup tie this week.
“I think just being on a team and just having some adrenaline just gives me even more energy, to be honest,” she said at a news conference. “I need to be on a team every week and not at home.”
The American veteran has been suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome for almost a year now and has not been seen in action in a professional event since her US Open campaign last year. She played an exhibition match against her sister,
Serena Williams, in November last season and announced that she will be seen back in action at the Brisbane International tournament in Australia in January. Venus continued to delay her dramatic comeback and pulled out of the tournament at the last moment;
she missed out the season-opening Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, as well.
The former world number one has been training with the American Fed Cup team on Wednesday morning and hopes she will be physically fit to lead her side in the coveted event against a strong Belarusian side led by the reigning world
number one, Victoria Azarenka. Venus’ lay off from the professional circuit certainly means that the American tennis icon is out of form and less can be said on her return at the Fed Cup tie.
“There are some things you can`t keep going through,” she added. “I still have to be reminded to slow down, but hopefully there will be a day when I don`t have to be reminded of that.”
Venus’ recovery rated from her illness has been relatively slower but the American veteran is well known for making impactful comebacks after long injury layoffs. However, she should be very careful with her return on tennis courts,
as she needs to be 100 per cent sure about her physical fitness before risking her health once again with an early comeback.
