Venus Williams moves on ahead while Vera Zvonareva exits – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Five time champion here, Venus Williams from American thrashed out Spaniard Maria Martinez Sanchez in their third round match at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships in London, England on Friday, 24th June.
Sporting a 2-0 lead against the Spaniard, Venus took a little over an hour to extend her winning streak to three matches as she recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Sanchez.
Sanchez won the toss and opted to receive first. A big mistake on the Spaniard’s part, as Venus opened serve and without breaking much sweat rushed into the lead, reeling off five straight games. Breaking Sanchez in the sixth game,
Venus was able to clinch a bagel win for herself as she went one up in the set score.
Maintaining her dominance in the second set, Venus clinched an early break to secure a 3-1 lead. An exchange of break later, Venus was still leading the set 4-2, which she extended to 5-2 moments later. Venus kept forcing errors
from Sanchez in the eighth game as she clinched yet another break to seal off her straight sets victory with a 6-2 win in the second set.
While Venus moves on ahead into the third round, second seeded Vera Zvonareva fell short as she was humbled by world number thirty three Tsvetana Pironkova from Bulgaria.
A flustered Zvonareva failed to put up any defence or capitalise on the opportunities. Failing to convert any of the six break point opportunities that she faced, the Russian number one may have just handed over the set to the
Bulgarian.
With no aces and only six winners, Pironkova recorded an acceptable 63 percent on her first and an equally impressive 73 percent on her second serve. Taking almost thirty five minutes, Pironkova converted two of two break point
opportunities to her advantage to clinch a 6-2 victory and go one up in the set score.
Pironkova continued her assault in the second set. Converting two of three break point opportunities, the Bulgarian led the set from the start. Hitting ten winners and two aces throughout the set, Pironkova successfully served
out the set at 5-3 to clinch a 6-3 win and seal her straight sets victory.
Pironkova and Venus will play each other in the fourth round.
