Venus Williams plonks Aleksandra Wozniak in round two – London Olympics 2012
World number 72, Venus Williams, technically registered an upset against the 52nd ranked Canadian, Aleksandra Wozniak, in the second round of the London Olympics on Tuesday. She won the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-3
and doubled her head-to-head lead to 2-0.
In the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami, both these players met for the first time and it was a gruelling three-setter on that occasion. That match was played in March this season. So, the improvement in the game play of the 32-year-old
American is imminent there.
Talking to the media representatives in a post-match press conference, Williams stated, "Me and Wozniak had a tough match earlier this year, and she had match points there, so of course I respect her game. But I think this surface
and my experience helped me a lot. I've had so much success here."
Wozniak started off in dismal fashion; dropped the opening serve game and failed to reply back that drowned her to a trail of 0-2. Williams clasped that opportunity with both hands and exerted more pressure on her rival resulting
in another breakthrough.
Scores moved on to 4-1 in favour of the American with the second breakthrough and she held her serve with minimal of troubles and posted a resounding lead over her rival. The 24-year-old Canadian was forced to hold serve in order
to keep the set alive but she could only win a single point on her serve and donated another breakpoint to her rival that ended the opening set in quick succession.
Williams commenced the second set with a tight serve hold and earned the first breakpoint after squandering one earlier in the second game. She held her serve to love and bagged another breakpoint on the third attempt in the fourth
game. She lead the scores 4-0 at that stage.
The following three games witnessed three consecutive breakpoints falling in favour of the Canadian starlet who lowered the trail to 2-5 and held her serve in the following game to further decrease her opponent’s lead to just two
games.
However, the 52nd ranked Canadian couldn’t hold Williams further. She was unable to break serve in a ‘do or die’ game in fact failed to win a single point that proved to be her downfall.
Venus Williams is scheduled to take on the likes of the seventh seed German superstar, Angelique Kerber, who is in emphatic run of form at the moment.
