Venus Williams received wild card entry for 2012 ASB Classic in Auckland – Tennis News
Venus Williams, five-time Wimbledon and two-time US Open champion will make her return in January 2012 as an active tennis player. Williams, who has been out of competition due to injuries, will be playing the ASB Classic, which
begins in Auckland from January 2, 2012.
This will also make Venus begin her 2012 career, who won her last single’s Grand Slam title at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. Earlier this year during the 2011 Australian Open, the right-handed American player withdrew from
the tournament due to the injury she sustained in previous matches. Venus did manage to make a return when she played the 2011 AEGON International but lost to Daniela Hantuchova (Slovakia) in the quarterfinals. Her injuries and setbacks made her enter the
2011 Wimbledon Championships as number 23 seeded, where she was unable to deliver, a sight was not expected to be seen by the former champion and world number one.
In 2010, Venus won 37 matches, lost two while in 2011she won 8 and lost 4. Her injuries have kept her sidelined from the sport, which was a concern for Williams, for she needs to regain her sporting act together to come back in
world ranking. Remaining on top of women’s tennis and former champion, Venus brings with her the aptitude and the resilience to beat the best women players on the tennis court, but her injuries have taken a toll on her health and career.
Considered one of the known faces in women’s professional tennis, Venus has won doubles championships with her sister, Serena. The two sisters have also played each other in Grand Slams on various occasions. William sisters have
been a dominating force in women’s division in the last decade, where both have intimidated players in every Grand Slam event for years. Winning her first Grand Slam title in 1999 by winning the US Open, Venus has won 14 Grand Slam singles titles and 12 double
Grand Slams. She also won an Olympic Gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and won two Gold Medals in doubles competition at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics, where she teamed with her sister.
Ranked at 101 spot in the world, Venus can return to her previous form where she was the main player in all Grand Slams but once her health and injury came forward, she could not recover her top spot. In January 2012, Venus will
be hopeful to make an injury-free comeback at the ASB Classic, the event making its debuted in 1986. The tournament directors of the ASB Classic are also excited to have Venus Williams in their event. Venus turned professional in 1994 but never won the ASB
Classic.
Richard Palmer, tournament director of the ASB event, was glad that Venus was talking part in their event in 2012. He said, "She's one of the iconic sportswomen in the world. There are probably four of them and she's one of them,
so to get one two years in a row [after Sharapova played this year's] is fantastic. She currently has the best record of an player active on the circuit, and that record speaks for itself.''
