Venus Williams registers opening round success against Paula Ormaechea – French Open 2012
Former world number one, Venus Williams, had a thumping start to her French Open campaign on Sunday, belting down the 120th ranked Argentine opponent, Paula Ormaechea, in the opening round brawl. The unseeded American
power house had to manoeuvre her way through the three-setter, settling the final scores at 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to clear the opening round of the Grand Slam event in Paris, France.
Currently holding the 53rd spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Venus showed glimpses of her vintage form to entertain the local crowd at the Roland Garros. She suffered an early blow in the
contest, with Ormaechea winning the opening set to lead 1-0. The 31-year-old veteran used her guile and pin-point power hitting to turn the tables on the Argentine youngster, driving her out of the tournament on the very first day.
Venus fired six thudding aces and 41 winners towards her opponent’s court, whilst Ormaechea could barely come up with 15 winners and not even a single ace in the entire matchup. However, the Argentine gave some real tough time
to Venus in the early parts of the match but gradually lost her steam to finish on the losing side in the end.
"She played super well the first set. She did a lot of the right things and I have to congratulate her on that set," Williams said. "Thankfully the next two sets were better for me, but she played beautifully today. The thing I
was most impressed with was her fight, determination. You can see she has a plan for this game."
Making her comeback to the professional circuit after a lengthy lay-off and is still lagging her true spark on the tennis courts, Venus is still hopeful for a fruitful voyage at the Roland Garros.
“I've learned how to live with this, but I have a lot to learn still," she said. "It's a big accomplishment just to be here right now. But I'm going up. It's an adventure and a journey. It's life happening."
Venus will either take on the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska or the unseeded Serbian, Bojana Jovanovski, in the second round draw.
