Venus Williams shoots up to world number 24 – Tennis News
Venus Williams jumped to the 24th spot in the world ranking after her stupendous achievement in the last week; won her maiden title of the current season at Luxembourg. She was ranked world number 41 at the start of
the tour of Luxembourg and the conquest has helped her bounce 15 spots.
It looks the good old days of the Williams sisters domination are back because her younger sister Serena Williams is already unbeatable at the moment. She is 32 years of age and suffering from several medical issues but still not
giving up and continuing to play like a true warrior. The spirit of the 44 title winner is definitely commendable especially in the circumstances that kept her at the sidelines for the bulk of the previous and current season.
Williams stated after her conquest, “Coming to the tournament this week I was just trying to play well. I didn't know if I could win this event, so to stand here as the winner is a wonderful way for me to end the year, and it really
makes me look forward to next year as well.”
Former world number one, Venus Williams, racked her 44th career title win at the BGL Luxembourg Open on Sunday. She entered the contest as an unseeded contender and had to take on some seeded players on her way to a
stupendous conquest. She thrashed the ninth seed German star, Mona Barthel, in the second round before dispatching the top seed Italian ace, Roberta Vinci, in the following battle.
Moving on, the struggling Andrea Petkovic was on her way in the semi-final. She was trailing a set down but bounced back to dispose the former number one German. Monica Niculescu couldn’t handle the onslaught of the American superstar
in the final of the tournament and surrendered quite early than expected.
Talking about the final match, she said, “The score looked easy but the first set was 6-2 and like 42 minutes. You have to put a lot of balls back in the court against her. It was back and forth, back and forth - I knew I just
had to stay focused and keep fighting.” Let’s hope that one of the best players of the modern era accomplishes the milestone of 50 career titles before her retirement.
