Venus Williams stoops in the first round of Wimbledon for the second time in 15 years – Tennis News
Former world number one, Venus Williams, witnessed an early exit from the Wimbledon Championships; bowing out to the Russian doubles specialist, Elena Vesnina, in the opening round clash on Monday. There was no motivation at all
and resignation was written all over her face; a feeling of being occupied was there in the game play.
She walked mildly from the Court 2 to the locker rooms, waving the fans with a disheartened look. It was all over for the 32-year-old superstar who witnessed her first round exit at Wimbledon since 1997. It was a painful moment
for the American but she had no one to blame for it. The injuries and medical problems are still intact and they are limiting down her game play. Questions are raised on her performance and the number of years of tennis that is left in her.
Extremely bobbed down effort and lethargic foot work was a clear cut indication that the American superstar wasn’t ready to put up a show on the eve of Monday. Williams just managed to win four games at All England Club and stooped
to the 79th ranked Russian. She had never lost the opening round match at Wimbledon except one occasion when she was extremely young and it was way back in her debut appearance in 1997.
David Witt is a hitting partner of the American and he was present during the meagre performance by Williams. He commented. "It's tough to watch sometimes. I think everybody sees it. I don't know what else to say." It was difficult
to absorb the fact that the American has failed to reach the advanced stages of the tournament. It was just a like a replay of her sisters loss at the first round of French Open.
Williams sounded extremely toned down and made an effort to convince her soul by stating, “I feel like I'm a great player.” There is no doubt that she is a world class act. However, her recent time at the professional circuit has
been extremely painful. She hasn’t been able to win a single title this season.
She was not the only one who faced early exit at Wimbledon. Italian superstar, Flavia Pennetta, and the Slovak beauty queen, Daniela Hantuchova, were also the one who lost to underdogs. Jelena Jankovic of Serbia met her fellow
former world number one, Kim Clijsters, in a tough first round draw and witnessed straight sets loss.
The opening day at Wimbledon was pretty dismal for the veterans of tennis.
