Venus Williams stuns Petra Kvitova in the second round clash – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Former world number one, Venus Williams, continued her trend of making thumping comebacks to the tennis courts after injury and made a huge upset in Miami, Florida. She outplayed the reigning world number three, Petra Kvitova of
Czech Republic, in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Friday. The score line was 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, in favour of the wildcard Venus.
A stiff battle was already anticipated between these two competitors but Kvitova’s defeat in the end was far surprising for most of the tennis fans. The third seed Czech was outshined by the brilliance of the American veteran,
who beat her in every segment of the game to come out as the winner. Venus bagged the opening set to exert some early pressure on the third seed opponent but lost her winning ways in the following set to let her comeback in the matchup. Kvitova dug deep in
the second set to bring the contest back on even terms but it was the last thing she did in the match. Venus’ mind-blowing aggression absolutely devastated the world number three, who utterly failed to hold a single serve in the entire third set. Venus finished
off the match with a bagel and moved into the third round of the tournament.
"It's a big step forward," Williams said. "I know she's playing well, so I just wanted to be focused on my game. I was trying to stay tough and make the points. I actually didn't really realize the third set was 6-0... I was just
trying to win the match, trying to get to six. It's great to have a win like this. I think I'm a pretty good clutch player, so that third set is a good place for me to be. It's where I try to bring my best tennis out."
Venus clinched 44 out of 57 first serve points in the match, whilst her opponent lagged far behind with just 26 points. She broke the Czech serve five out of 14 times to book a place in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open.
Venus will face off against Aleksandra Wozniak in the next round.
