Venus Williams topples Belinda Bencic in round one – BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012
Former world number one, Venus Williams, crushed the Swiss wild card entrant, Belinda Bencic, with a breadstick at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012 on Tuesday. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the world number 618 to secure a place in the
round of 16 at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament held in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
The American icon recreated her magic to slaughter Bencic in straight sets in their first meeting. After earning the success in one hour and eight minutes, Williams edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the 15-year-old and inched closer towards
her 44th career title.
The 32-year-old, who withdrew from the China Open with injuries, commented in a post match press conference:
"My opponent played really well - she was ready from the first point. She was determined, fought for every point and didn't miss a lot - that was great though, because I got to hit a lot of balls. It was a great first round for me. I was playing with some
problems at the Open - it was difficult to serve, and that's a huge part of my game. But I have worked really hard to be able to be here, and I came planning to put some good serves in the box. I was happy with it today.”
Williams stormed into this indoor hard court event. She drew the first blood in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Regardless of losing her edge in the very next game, the American broke her rival’s serve again and jumped to a 5-2 lead. She plucked
her serve once again and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
Currently ranked 41st in the WTA Premier Rankings, Williams perfected her game in the proceeding set. She got the coveted break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. After Bencic held her serve in the third game, the veteran reeled off
last four games and pulled out the set with a breadstick.
Next in line for Williams is the ninth seed, Mona Barthel from Germany.
