Venus and Justine win on Wimbledon day one
Venus Williams and Justine Henin have won their opening matches at Wimbledon on day one.
Henin, runner-up to Amelie Mauresmo at the All England Club in 2006, defeated Anastasija Sevastova 6-4, 6-3 in her first round match to take the first step towards winning a maiden Wimbledon title and completing a career Grand Slam this year.
While there had to be some doubts over Henin’s form after she was knocked out in the fourth round of the French Open by eventual runner-up Sam Stosur, the former world No. 1 turned in an encouraging performance at the UNICEF Open in Holland in the lead-up to Wimbledon, winning her second title of the year.
Last year's beaten finalist Williams was similarly untroubled in her opening match of the tournament, dispatching Rossana De Los Rios 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and four minutes. Williams hit 25 winners to her opponent’s four and served six aces for the match.
