Venus joins Jankovic in Wimbledon fourth round
Venus Williams has seen off an early challenge from Alisa Kleybanova to move through to the fourth round at Wimbledon.
The 26th seed started strongly against Williams, securing the early break in the first set, but Venus hit back with two breaks of serve of her own to eventually take the set 6-4.
The second seed then secured the break in Kleybanova’s second service game of the second set, and another one before the Russian managed to claw back one of the breaks in an attempt to at least bring a modicum of respectability on the scoreboard.
A third break of serve in the set by the five-time Wimbledon champion, however, ensured that wasn’t to be the case as she ran away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory, in what was in the end a showcase of the 30-year-old’s grass court prowess.
Williams now joins fellow seeds Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Jelena Jankovic, Marion Bartoli and Vera Zvonareva in the round of 16 as she closes on a fourth consecutive Wimbledon final.
Jankovic though appeared to have some concerns with a leg injury during her 6-0, 6-3 win over 28th seed Alona Bondarenko, although the Serb is hoping they won’t impact her as she moves towards the business end of the tournament.
“I had some pain during the match after first set,” Jankovic, who will play Zvonareva in her next match, said. “I have maybe two days to rest and get some treatment. Hopefully everything will be okay.”
