Vera Dushevina defeats Alexandra Dulgheru in the 2nd round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Russian Vera Dushevina got the better of Romaine Alexandra Dulgheru in the second round match of the Hansol Korea Open 2011. On the 22nd of September 2011 the Russian won in straight sets of 6-3, 6-1 victory after battling it out
for sixty seven minutes on the hard courts of Olympic Tennis Courts in Seoul, South Korea.
The two were meeting for the first time in their professional career and were unfamiliar with each other’s style and technique. Opting to serve first was Dushevina, and both the players were effectively able to position themselves
on the score board at 1-1.
During the next two games the players held their serves on alternate games and then in the fifth and the sixth broke each other back-to-back to equalize the score at 3-3. Vera was then again able to hold her serve in the seventh
game by smashing a crosscourt backhand and in the eighth break her adversary to take the lead at 5-3.
She was now serving for the opening set and with a geometric precision smashed an ace at 40-30 to reel off the initial set with a 6-3 victory.
Serving first this time was Dulgheru, who held her serve in the first game and was quick to get on the scoreboard. In the next game Vera was first to break in the third game and she took a mini lead by holding her serve in the
fourth game.
With a comfortable lead of 3-1, Vera was now feeling extremely confident and with the crowd boosting her performance she went on to breaking her adversary in the fifth game for the second time. By the end of the sixth game Dushevina
was standing at 5-1 and was now looking to break her adversary for the third and last time.
As Dulgheru was serving on breakpoint, the ball netted and she double faulted, endorsing the game point to her Russian adversary.
Dushevina won the second set with a bread stick victory and was able to secure a place in the quarterfinal of the event where she will face Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva.
