Vera Dushevina tumbles over Yung-Jan Chan in round one – Family Circle Cup 2012
Russian star, Vera Dushevina, got the better of the Taiwanese contender, Yung-Jan Chan, in straight sets at the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Monday. She nudged up a 6-4, 7-6(5) score line against the Taiwanese youngster to secure a place in the second round
at this green clay court tournament held in South Carolina, United States.
Dushevina maintained her winning streak against the world number 133 after ruling in this one hour and 57-minute battle. The contestants last fought each other at the Sony Ericsson Open last month and after stomping over Chan here, the Russian extended her
lead in their head-to-head series by 2-0.
The 25-year-old made a wobbly entry at the Family Circle Tennis Center and after losing her opening serve, she fell 0-3. However, she unleashed flurry of slices to go on a five-game tear before Chan could hold on again. Dushevina held her serve once more
and pocketed the opener by winning six games to four.
The Moscow-born kept momentum rolling into the following set and after getting the coveted break in the third game, she took the initial lead. Regardless of losing her edge in the very next game, she capitalised on another break chance in the end and took
the lead again at 6-5. However, Dushevina failed to serve out the match and took the set to a tie-breaker. She jumped to a 4-2 lead before pulling out the set with a 7-6(5) victory.
Overall, the Russian dropped nine double faults and several unforced errors. However, Dushevina amazingly warded off five out of eight breakpoints she faced and converted four out of nine break opportunities to her advantage.
She will square off against the third seed, Marion Bartoli, who received a first round bye after being the top eight seed of the tournament.
The 14th seed, Polona Hercog, will also feature in the second round. The Slovene failed to block the lone breakpoint she faced but capitalised on three out of nine break chances to manipulate a 6-4, 6-3 success. She smacked four aces and brilliantly
clinched 30 out of 41 points on her first serve share to earn the glory.
