Vera Zvonareva, Samantha Stosur qualify for season end championship in Istanbul – Tennis News
Two more spots get filled with the names of Vera Zvonareva and Samantha Stosur in the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships draws. Zvonareva and Stosur are the qualifiers number six and seven respectively leaving behind place for just
one more player to make it to the top eight to compete for the season-end championship in Istanbul, Turkey.
Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka and Li Na have already qualified in the singles category for this mega tournament. In the doubles category, it’s the teams of 2011 French Open champions, Katarina
Srebotnik and Kveta Peschke and 2011 US Open champions, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.
Zvonareva has consistently qualified for this championship for the last three years and she was also a part of it in 2004. Her dream run in TED BNP Paribas championship came in 2008, when she reached the finals of the tournament.
She said "It's an amazing feeling to qualify for the Championships again. Women's tennis is extremely competitive and knowing that I made it to Championships means I've had a good season and played consistently throughout the year. It's an honour to make it
to Istanbul".
Stosur qualified in 2010 for the first time and now this year would mark her second appearance in the tournament. She said "It's very exciting to qualify for Championships for the second straight year, especially because it will
be the first year of this event in Istanbul," she said. "I look forward to playing in another unique venue. It's the perfect way to end the great season that I've had."
Chairman and CEO of the WTA, Stacey Allaster, also congratulated the two players for qualifying for the season-end finale. She was thrilled with the consistent performance of Zvonareva and wished her good luck for his fifth visit
to the championship. She also praised Stosur for winning the US Open last month and wished her best of luck for TED BNP Paribas championship.
The battle to clinch the last spot continues between Agnieszka Radwanska and Marion Bartoli. Bartoli’s probability is minimal as she needs to win the Osaka and Moscow championships this month and would require Radwanska to exit
before the quarterfinals of Moscow this month. However, if both players don’t reach the stated rounds, then they would be joined by Andrea Petkovic in the battle to earn the last spot.
The two empty spots in the doubles category would see the battle being fought amongst the teams of 2011 Australian Open champions, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta, 2010 US Open champions,Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova and the
rising tandem of Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko.
