Vera Zvonareva beats Ekaterina Makarova in 2nd round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Continuing with the 2nd round matches of the Cincinnati Open 2011, a Premier 5 Event, the world No.2, Vera Zvonareva took out her country fellow, Ekaterina Makarova, in straight sets.
Lasting only 70 minutes, the two collided with Zvonareva having the greater force. Playing at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre, Ohio hard court, the 26-year-old world No.2 had very less trouble pleasing her fans and making it into
the 3rdround.
Currently at the pole position of her career, the world No.2 has a unique way of playing. Playing equally good in defence as well as offense, the Russian is also an excellent baseliner and net player. Zvonareva is also known for
her matched fitness owing to her unmatchable lateral movement on the circuit.
Makarova, on the other hand, stands at world No.40. The 23-year-old has surely made her way to the top rankings but lately has been down with her form. Losing 6 out of her last 10 matches, her image has considerably dropped down
and so has her ranking. Formerly ranked as the world No.29 as per earlier this year, the 23-year-old lost it completely while playing against the world No.2.
The 70 minutes match started off with the young Russian serving first. Saving a breakpoint, the 23-year-old took off with the first game of set 1. Returning ever number the world No.40 scored, Zvonareva levelled the scores immediately,
1-0, with Makarova to serve next.
The scores levelled at 2-2 and then on 3-3 in the first set, before the world No.2 broke the young Russian in game 7 to lead 4-3. Extending her lead further, the 26-year-old swept away game 8 and finished off the set breaking the
young starter for the second time in the first set and won 6-3.
Succeeding in set 1, Zvonareva served to open set 2 and initiated the scorecard, 1-0. The marvellous world No.2 turbocharged her shots in combination with her endless stamina to win 3 breakpoints in set 2. The scores started off
at 0-0 and ended at Zvonareva winning 6 straight games to win her set with a bagel and the match 6-3 and 6-0.
The predicted winner went to become the eventual winner of the match. She now moves into the third round of the Cincinnati Open where she will play Petra Martic for a spot in the quarterfinal.
