Vera Zvonareva geared up for Mercury Insurance Open 2011 – Tennis News
World number three Vera Zvonareva has arrived in California and is practicing hard to prove her top spot at the Mercury Insurance Open, a WTA Premier event held at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California from July 30th to
August 7th every year.
South California Open or the Mercury Insurance Open, because of its sponsor, is a major women’s tennis championship held annually since 1984 and is known for its attractive location and amazing atmosphere. Zvonareva is going to
be the top seed there and by clinching title here, she not only wants to prove her class but is also seeking to find her rhythm for the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam event held on the hard courts.
26-year-old Russian recently displayed her brilliant skills at Baku. She overpowered some of rising tennis stars to clinch her second title of the season. Zvonareva trashed Georgian Anna Tatishvili and Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva
in the quarters and the semi-finals of this event to set-up a clash with her seventh seeded compatriot Ksenia Pervak. She slew her countrywoman with a breadstick to triumph at Baku.
“Hey guys! After couple days off at home after Baku and a long trip over to California i was able to get back to training today in Carlsbad!” Zvonareva tweeted.
The Moscow native is gearing up for the tournament and had already started training. She is improving her two-handed backhands and working on her agility.
She further tweeted, “It was cloudy today and felt quite cool after playing in a heat in Baku ))) Got another 2 days of training before the tournament starts ))).”
As the top seed, the Russian is expected to receive a bye in the first round. The blooming Russian, who likes all surfaces, is in awesome run of form this year. She exited from the opening round at Sydney but unleashed her true
colours at Australian Open where she made a semi-final showing. She then made a last four appearances at Pattaya, Miami and Brussels and clinched her first title of the season at Doha after stunning the world number one Caroline Wozniacki. Zvonareva reached
the third round at Wimbledon.
