Vera Zvonareva ousts Iveta Benesova in the 3rd round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
Fourth seeded Vera Zvonareva dust binned Czech Iveta Benesova in the third round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. The player took up the gantlet on the outdoor hard courts of Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan. Fourth seeded Russian
defeated the Czech in straight sets of 6-1, 6-2 on the 28th of September after just sixty one minutes of play.
Starting the opening set was Zvonareva, who was a more experienced and competitive player against the former world number 25 Benesova. The set was opened with a thrilling play between the two as they battled two deuces until finally
the Russian was able to hold her serve to place herself on the scoreboard at 1-0.
Trailing behind was the Czech, who wanted to prove a point and restore her dignity against the world number four Zvonareva and as she too held serve the scoreboard rolled to 1-1. However, Zvonareva wanted to edge away from her
opponent and then maybe further increase the gap and in order to do so she utilized the serve-break-serve method and was now standing at 4-1.
Wanting to further increase the gap, Zvonareva again broke her adversary in the sixth game and was now two breaks and a game up leading with a 5-1. Wanting to clog a quick victory, she smashed an ace at 40-30 and was able to ease
away with the opening set with a breadstick victory.
Second to serve was Benesova in the second set and neither o f the players wanted the other to gain the edge and so the score progressed on even terms for the first four games. Zvonareva was a dominating player and broke her adversary
in the fifth and then in the seventh game as Benesova double faulted to reel off a 5-2 lead.
After the seventh game, Zvonareva was serving for the match in the eighth game and as she served she smashed a couple of aces and then a final ace at 40-30 to emerge victorious with a deftly 6-2 victory.
The number four seeded Russian was able to secure a spot in the quarterfinal of the event where she will be facing unseeded compatriot Maria Kirilenko.
