Vera Zvonareva outmuscles Kateryna Bondarenko in round two – Family Circle Cup 2012
An exhibition of sheer dominance and class was witnessed from the former world number two, Vera Zvonareva, in the second round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday. The fourth seed Russian veteran barely took 50 minutes to dispose
of the 66th ranked Ukrainian, Kateryna Bondarenko, with double breadstick, 6-1, 6-1.
Currently holding the number nine spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) World Rankings, Zvonareva was absolutely unplayable throughout the matchup against the Ukrainian. The 27-year-ols simply outclassed Bondarenko in every
segment of the game, driving her out of the WTA Premier event in Charleston, USA. The 25-year-old Ukrainian proved to be a complete mismatch with the fourth seed Russian and couldn’t pose any serious resistance to withstand her opponent’s fury.
Zvonareva kept her clean sheet against Bondarenko, extending her head-to-head by 3-0 in singles combats against the Ukrainian and improving her winning record to 6-5 for the current year. She belted 65 per cent of her first serve
on target and dropped just six points o it, bagging 20 out of 26 en route to victory. She broke her opponent’s serve five out of seven times in the match, while Bondarenko utterly failed to even craft a break opportunity in the entire contest.
A fiery start from Zvonareva put her in command in the opening set of the match. She broke her opponent in the second game of the match and held her own serve to lead 3-0 in no time. Bondarenko finally held her serve in the fourth
game to open her account but a cracking break point conversion in the sixth game eased the Russian’s path to close out the opener with a breadstick at 6-1.
The bewildered Ukrainian dropped her serve in the very first game of the following set to fall back 0-2 early again. She curtailed the deficit to 1-3 but it was the only game she won in the entire second set. Zvonareva stung two
successive breaks of serve in the fifth and seventh games to race away to victory at 6-1. The fourth seed will play against Lucie Hradecka or Stefanie Voegele in the third round of the Family Circle Cup later this week.
