Vera Zvonareva surmounts Caroline Wozniacki in 2nd round robin match – WTA Championships 2011
Sixth seeded Vera Zvonareva breezed past reigning number one Caroline Wozniacki in the second round robin match to conclude the second day at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011.
The players were set to play on indoor hard courts of the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey. Although, it took two hours and eighteen minutes for Zvonareva to overpower Wozniacki, she eventually survived a mid match fall to
score 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 on Wednesday the 26th of October 2011.
The first set of the match was clearly a one sided victory for Zvonareva. She took the competitive edge in just thirty five minutes and was one up in the match. The sixth seeded Russian hit 52 percent of her first serves on target
and had bagged a walloping 73 percent of her first serve points.
Even though Zvonareva had committed two double faults, she capitalized on a hundred percent of her breakpoints.
Albeit, both the players have an extremely impressive return, Zvonareva outshone the Dane (Wozniacki) with stronger defensive skills and she managed to smash numerous winners.
Initiating the first round of the match was Wozniacki and she gotten off to an appalling start. Nevertheless, Zvonareva was capable of winning four games in a row to place herself on the scoreboard at 4-0. She eventually restricted
her adversary to only two games and clogged the opening set with a 6-2 victory.
However, a turn of events took place during the last two games of the second set. Although, the players matched a blow for a blow and the score progressed on event terms until the eighth game, it was in the last game that Zvonareva
slipped by double faulting on her serve and gave away the second set.
Nonetheless, by the end of the first two games, the challengers had bagged a set each and the match was pushed into the decisive set. Commencing the decisive set was once again Wozniacki and again she was unable to hold her foremost
service game. However, this time Zvonareva was able to squander two straight games to ease herself on to the scoreboard at 2-0.
During the fifth and the sixth game, the two traded breaks but once more Zvonareva was leading the game. In the last three games; the competitors held serve for the seventh and the eighth game but in the ninth, As Wozniacki served,
her forehand shot went wayward and she gifted away the set and the match to the sixth seeded Russian.
Overall in the match, Zvonareva accomplished 54 percent of her total points won against Wozniacki’s only 46 percent of total points won.
Next up for the Russian is Pole Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round robin match of the event.
