Vera Zvonareva thrashes Bojana Jovanovski in second round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Top seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva got rid of unseeded Serbian Bojana Jovanovski in the second round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two competitors had taken up the challenge on indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium in Moscow,
Russia. After just sixty minutes the top seeded Russian thrashed the unseeded Serbian in a double bread stick victory (6-1, 6-1) on Wednesday the 19th of October.
The last time the two had met was on hard courts of the Australian Open during the second round and Zvonareva had managed to bounce back from a set down to secure her victory and led the head-to-head score with 1-0.
Inaugurating the first round of the event was Jovanovski and she quickly bagged a game on her serve to open the scoreboard at 1-0. The top seed was also able to skilfully hold her opening serve and placed herself beside her adversary
at 1-1. It was in the third game that Jovanovski double faulted and endorsed a game to her opponent, who then held her serve to take a mini lead at 3-1 by the end of the fourth game.
During the fifth game Jovanovski battled a few aces to ward off Zvonareva, however, she was unable to do so. Mean while, Zvonareva not only pressurized her adversary but powered through the set. As she served for the opening set,
she smashed a marvellous forehand shot and she secured the opening set with a breadstick victory.
The top seeded Russian was now one up in the match and as she dominated the first set, she set the tone for the second.
Kicking off the second set was Zvonareva, whose performance was boosted by the home crowd and she successfully placed herself on the scoreboard at 1-0. She then went on to capitalizing on an early and shifted the scoreboard at
2-0. Moreover, she further increased her lead to 3-0 by holding her serve in the third game.
It was in the fourth game that Jovanovski actually made a return and that too with a hold of serve. Although, she reduced the deficit to 1-4, she was unable to muster anymore games and eventually lost the set. On the other hand,
Zvonareva took out her Agame and by utilizing the serve-break-serve technique she conquered the second set with another breadstick victory and the match.
Next up for the top seeded Russian is either eighth seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova or Czech Klara Zakopalova in the third round of the Kremlin Cup.
