Vera Zvonareva trashes Kimiko Date-Krumm in round two – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number nine, Vera Zvonareva, ousted the 74th ranked Japanese, Kimiko Date-Krumm, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 during the second round clash in the BNP Paribas Open. It was a straight forward contest for the Russian
who gobbled up the win in just 74 minutes.
A sizeable crowd gathered at the arena to witness the encounter. They came to watch the Russian queen in action. The first set was hijacked by her as she crushed her opponent down with a couple of early breakthroughs in the match.
She cruised along nicely with no pressure at all and scores tickled over to 5-1 in her favour.
The Japanese fought back in the contest with a breakthrough in a ‘do or die’ game to keep the set alive. She did well to hold her serve and pushed the trail down to 5-3 but couldn’t repeat the heroics for the second time; lost
the set with a difference of just seven points.
Zvonareva bagged 31 points in total; however, she committed three double faults compared to just two of her opponent. It was something she was frustrated about but nevertheless it didn’t affect the final score line a lot.
An amazing start to the second set witnessed a cracking display of shear pace and power at both ends. They were going to toe-to-toe with one another and not allowing any opportunity whatsoever to their rivals to take any sort of
benefit. Krumm was the first player to create an opening for her in the set but she failed to convert the critical breakpoint in her favour.
Zvonareva did well to keep her calm and saved a couple of breakpoint before taking the scores to 4-4. An all-round onslaught from the Russian pulled down the morale of her opponent who didn’t had any plan B to counter this assault.
She saved a breakpoint at the crucial stage but couldn’t save another one failing a serve break down to the Russian.
The ninth ranked Russian did well to hold her serve and book a third round spot. She will take on the Slovak contestant, Daniela Hantuchova, in the third round.
