Vera Zvonareva vs Samantha Stosur – Quarterfinal Preview: US Open 2011
Russian tennis star Vera Zvonareva is all set to take on Australian number one Samantha Stosur in the quarterfinal of 2011 US Open here in the City of New York, United States. An interesting encounter is expected to take
place as both players looked in stunning form in their pre-quarterfinal matches.
Zvonareva has been in decent from since the start of this season. Ranked second in the Women’s, Tennis Association rankings, Zvonareva has given considerable results in all other three Grand Slam tournaments in the year 2011.
At the Australian Open, she lost in the semi-final to Belgian Kim Clijsters. At 2011 Roland Garros, she was ousted in the fourth round by compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Just a few weeks back, she made it to the third round in the Wimbledon Championships
at the all England Lawn Club.
Apart from her impressive run in the Majors tournament, Zvonareva lifted her 11th WTA trophy at Doha and stood runner up at the 2011 Carlsbad event. She will be hoping to bring more consistency in
her game play to win her first Grand Slam title on the tour. However, she will have to fight her own nerves if she wants to make it all the way this time around.
The 27-year-old made it to the quarterfinal with a stunning 6-2, 6-3 victory over rising German star Sabine Lisicki. Earlier in the third round, she got the better of Anabel Medina Garrigues. Kateryna Bondarenko and Stephanie
Foretz Gacon also proved to be easy prey for her in the second and first rounds respectively. If she can use her big forehand and backhand winners effectively, she can surely clinch victory in the quarterfinal.
Zvonareva’a opponent in the quarterfinal will be Australian Samantha Stosur. Although the Australian has slipped to world number ten following her consistent failures on the tour, she has been some really solid tennis on
the hard courts of US Open. Samantha’s powerful serve and baseline tactics will play a huge role in deciding the outcome of the game.
The Aussie booked her place in the last eight with a sensational three set victory over Maria Kirilenko. She also had a tough third round match against Nadia Petrova. Stosur has already spent a lot of time on the court and
she is expected to be a bit tired for her next match-up. However, the ninth seed has an absolutely terrific 7-2 head to head record against Zvonareva.
In her last seven meetings with Stosur, Zvonareva has struggled to find her game play and she must get over her failures if she wants to stand a chance. Both players are equally matched but considering Stosur’s recent record
against the Russian, she is expected to pull off a victory in three tight sets.
