Vera Zvonareva withdraws from the US Open Championships – Tennis News
World number 16, Vera Zvonareva, will not take part in the upcoming US Open Championships at New York due to the viral illness that has troubled her ever since the third round exit at the London Olympics at the hands of the American fourth seed, Serena Williams.
She took this decision after having a prolonged discussion with the physio and her personal doctor, who clearly stated that there was no chance for her to be fit before the Championships commencing from 27th of August.
Zvonareva has not seen the top of her career for a long time and the current season has been pretty ordinary for the 27-year-old Russian. She lost the opening match of the current year at the Apia Sydney International from her compatriot, Svetlana Kuznetsova; made three rounds at the Australian Open and retired in the quarter-final of the Pattaya Open due to an injury.
She carried the same injury and decided to take part in the Qatar Ladies Open only lasted five games in the second set before retiring for the second straight time in the season. She couldn’t participate in the third round clash of the BNP Paribas Open due to illness and cancelled the match; allowing her opponent a walkover.
A wildcard entrant dumped her in straight sets in her first clash of the Sony Ericsson Open. A breakthrough tournament that featured some good run of form from the Russian witnessed three consecutive wins before she was ousted by the ninth seed Czech star, Lucie Safarova, at the Family Circle Cup.
The luck didn’t change for the former playboy magazine cover model at the Mutua Madrid Open and she was forced out in the first round by the Czech star, Petra Cetkovska. Zvonareva returned in the Wimbledon Championships after a slight injury lay-off but again retired in the third round because the problem erupted during her clash against the former world number one, Kim Clijsters.
Since the end of Olympics, the Russian superstar hasn’t featured in any tournament and she will not take part in the US Open also. It is a major disappointment for the Russians who wanted her to represent their country at New York.
