Question:

Verbal abuse of a minor by a police officer - What can be done and how far can this be taken in Canada?

I am 16 and did something stupid (nothing serious). The police officer that caught me verbally abused me before taking me to the station. I threatened to charge him for verbal abuse so he let me off easy. I am not planning to pursue the matter because he let me off easy, but I would like to know more about this in case it happens again. Also, just out of curiosity, what if the officer was caught on tape verbally abusing me?

Thanks for any answers

  1. What you perceive as verbal abuse is different with what the law states.  Just because you didn't appreciate the way you were addressed  by the officer, doesn't mean it was abuse.

The language used by officers when addressing 16 year olds, is used to "scare them straight".  Since you have perceived it differently, the officer shouldn't have let you off.

  2. You could egg his house!
