Verizon DSL connection problem

Question

I have a single computer at home with a modem only. All lights are steady on the modem. I tried different wires. I checked all filters. The light does come on when i put the Ethernet cable into the computer. The computer says the Ethernet card is working properly. I have reset the modem and renewed/released the IP. My IP address can not be renewed automatically so i changed it manually to Verizon's IP. I have pinged the IP many times. All packets are lost when i ping the IP except one time where 1 packet was received. What am i missing?

I had this problem before. I had to do a system restore to get it to work again. I had installed some program and it interfered with the internet. Before that I did all the other steps also like pinging the ip address, restarting my computer and resetting the modem. I hope this helps.
