Question:

Verizon DSL vs. Comcast (Boston , MA)?

Hi, I live in Boston and I am thinking about switching from Comcast (cable connection I think its called Broadband..) to verizon internet service. The main reason why I am want to switch is because Comcast recently started blocking Limewire, which I use frequently. However when I spoke to a sales lady at Comcast she assured me that they are not blocking Lime or any peer to peer sites (is she lying?). Anyway, the thing is Verizon Fios is not available yet in my area so I would be switching to a DSL service, which I am told is much slower but it is also much cheaper (about 1/2 as much). Is it worth to switch to a slower service if I HAVE to have Limewire and am I going to be totally frustrated with a DSL connection??? Thanks...J

  1. i agree with the prior poster , dsl most of the day is faster then cable , because cable is shared bandwith  , your limewire is not being blocked by comcast , my guess is with out looking at your machine is you have a firewall setting that is not correct

  2. First off, cable is no faster than DSL. Just as with cable you can pay for the various speeds of DSL. As to the Limewire problem, it may be that Comcast is doing what is called throttling the connection. Basically, they are saying that even though you are paying for your bandwidth (speed) you can't use it all the time for P2P sharing. They are not the only company to do this so check first with any ISP to see if they do throttle any connection. the other issue cable tends to suffer from is network congestion. When I had cable internet, my connection would slow to a crawl at the same time every day when people would be getting home from work and start surfing. It would speed back up in the late evening and into the day when people where sleeping or at work. I have DSL for over 8 yrs now and have not seen it slow nor have I ever been frustrated by it not being fast enough. Good luck and happy surfing.
