Verizon wireless smartphone? Help...suggestions?

Well i need a new phone. I would like to purchase one from EBAY. But I'm afraid when i try and activate it they will make me get a data plan since it is a smart phone.

I currently have a family plan with unlimited texting and instant messaging.

Will it be easy to activate the phone and not get a data plan?

They can not force you to change your plan.  Since you would have the phone from eBay, not them, they will just change the ESN from your old phone to the new one.  Of course this means if you try to access any of the smart phone features such as Email or Mobile Web, you will be charged Data, which is like $1.99 per megabyte, but you would be able to have it on your Family Select Plan.
