Verma Sameer beats Sudarjat Panji Akbar in round-of-16 of Badminton Asia Youth U-19 Championships
India’s talented shuttler, Verma Sameer, found a place in the quarter-final stage after beating Indonesia’s Sudarjat Panji Akbar, in the Boy’s Singles round-of-16 of the 2011 Badminton Asia Youth U-19 Championships, in India, on Thursday, July 7.
The Indian proved his worth by displaying top-quality badminton against the Indonesian and clinched the match after a long three-set battle, which took 56 minutes. Sameer cheered the home crowd by playing up to their expectations in this important match.
The start of the opening set was interesting, where both shuttlers played tremendous badminton. The spirited Indian was playing an attacking game by utilising every opportunity of hitting the bird hard to the ground. His incredible speed enabled him to compete
well with the Indonesian, who was struggling in the opening game.
The score progressed equally from both sides and the Indian managed a small gap of 11-9 at the interval. After the break the Indonesian started to hit powerful smashes, but failed to dominate the game as Sameer’s defence was incredible. The Indian was playing
with great precision and his finishing was perfect.
The score remained tight until the ending points of the game, where Sameer dug deep into his reserves to score the finishing points to win the set by a margin of 21-19, in 20 minutes.
The Indonesian raised his level of play in the second game of the match, where he became aggressive and geared up his speed in all corners of the court. Sameer tried to put up a good show but failed to continue his impressive run in the concluding phase
of the game and lost the set by a decent difference of 18-21, in 19 minutes.
Sameer regained his form and played terrific badminton in the deciding game of this thrilling battle. The high and powerful jump smashes of Sameer put the Indonesian in trouble as he became defensive, allowing the challenger to play more attacking badminton.
The Indian dominated the game and won it by a margin of 21-16, in just 17 minutes. The rubber-set battle ended with a score of 21-19, 18-21 and 21-16, in 56 minutes.
