Vermaelen: Arsenal will be title contenders this season
Arsenal's brick wall of a center back is confident that Arsenal will be able to silence all their critics this season, by pulling off a top notch challenge to win the Premier League title.
It has been five years since Arsenal won any major trophy and as long as six years since they won the Premier League crown. By all means that is not a bad record for teams but Arsenal are a team which is overflowing with quality and talent, which is why this appears to be a really bad numerical representation for the club.
They will however be looking to set the records straight in the coming 2010 – 2011 season. Arsene Wenger’s squad was always said to be too young and immature to actually ever contend for the title. But that young squad has had more than enough time to develop and mature and the time is just right for these youngsters to show just what they are capable of and prove Arsene Wenger’s undying trust in them was always justified.
There is a strong sense of optimism that is currently floating around the Emirates in which the cabinet would finally see some silverware come into it and give rest to their trophy ghost.
The Belgian centre back Thomas Vermaelen is more than capable of being the best defender in the world at this current moment in time and he has officially brushed of any claims that stated that Arsenal could not compete with the heavy weights who are currently running the Premier League. "The spirit in the camp is good," he said in the Evening Standard. "We have a good young group who are very aggressive and want to improve. I think people will always say we can't compete - it is not the first time.
"But we have to do what we always do which is work hard and play our own game. Then we can compete.
"I hope we can compete for the title this year and I'm convinced we will."
Vermaelen came into the Arsenal squad last season and has done nothing less than constantly impress everyone watching. He was a force to be reckoned with and was arguably one of the best players in the Arsenal squad and the Premier League last season. The fact that he is making such bold statements could only mean that Arsenal are going to be out on a mission to prove a point to anyone and everyone who has doubted them in the past.
The way things are currently going at the Emirates and if the pre season frendlies are anything to go by then the fans of the club and fans of football in general should prepare themselves to watch some of the most breathtaking displays of football ever witnessed on the pitch.
Most Arsenal fan’s will also be more then delighted if the team manages to end the trophy drought at the club, but like always everyone will just have to wait and see how things go at the club this coming season.
