The medium-fast bowler injured his hamstring during a first-class match at the same ground last month and his participation in the first Test was in doubt. However, the left-handed batsman has made it clear that his new ball bowler has recovered well and
is all set to take part in the competition.
“Vernon has come through his fitness test well. Unless he stiffens up later on Tuesday or in the evening, he is fit to play,” said Smith.
Having done well at the domestic level, Philander made his Test debut against Australia in 2011 at home, impressing one and all with his ability to bowl with accuracy. Since then, the 27-year-old cricketer has been the most successful South African bowler
