Vernon Wells shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 1-0 – MLB Update
Vernon Wells made a walk off hit in tenth to decide the first game of the series in Los Angeles Angels favour with a 1-0 win over rivals Seattle Mariners at Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Friday, August 5.
The pitchers dominated game was scoreless until bottom of the tenth inning, but a little chance from the Mariners proved valuable for the Angels. Mariners’ closer Cortes tossed five strikes in tenth inning before allowing defeat earning two hits.
Jered Weaver worked complete nine innings and struck-out eight batters over his 127 pitches. He also allowed seven hits and one walk but his stunning performance was the main attraction for the packed stadium. It was the sixth scoreless outing for Weaver
in this season.
Weaver, who 14-5 record with exceptional 0.94 WHIP said, "I'm just going to go out there and try to keep runs off the board. Obviously, when you are getting to the sixth, seventh, eighth inning and the guys aren't putting any runs up, you've got to try to
keep them off the board."
Jordan Walden, who worked as closer, tossed a perfect tenth inning and struck-out one batter to get his third win of the season and now has 3-3 record with a 2.84 ERA.
The game might have opened in the fourth inning as Jeff Mathis entered the plate with two bases load, but he again failed to avail this chance. He could not touch even a single hit in three at-bats and dropped his averages to .181.
"Obviously, he's not swinging the bat real well right now, but from a team standpoint, his catching overshadows what he does at the plate. It always does," Weaver said. "He's nails back there.”
Mariners’ Jason Vargas also worked brilliantly and remained scoreless over his six innings. He struck-out three batters and walked one batter along with seven hits. His reliever Aaron Laffey tossed a scoreless inning, Jamey Wright worked less than one inning
without any score and Josh Lueke also remained scoreless over his single inning.
