Vernon Wells shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 6-3 – MLB Update
Vernon Wells hit a solo shot in the third inning and then a tie-breaking two-run, on Monday, June 13, to give Los Angeles Angels a 6-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field, Seattle.
Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said, "He's not going to go out and hit two home runs every game, but coupled with a good game a few night ago and hitting the ball well yesterday, hopefully he's found his rhythm. He had some big hits tonight obviously, and
hopefully he can start squaring some balls up."
Los Angeles kicked off the first encounter of three-game series with renewed confidence. Jason Vargas, the starting pitcher of Seattle was hardly given time to settle when he came for pitching.
Howard Kendrick singled to left to score the first run for the Angels. However, Dan Haren could not contain the Mariners’ offence as Adam Kennedy doubled to right to tie the score in the bottom of first inning.
Franklin Gutierrez scored the tiebreaking run for the Mariners in the bottom of the second inning which did not last for long as Vernon Wells reverted with his homer to left, tying the score once again.
"When you're getting pitches middle-in and they are jamming you or getting hanging breaking balls and missing them then something is wrong in there," Wells said. "I just sat in the corner over here and just watched video over and over again and find something
that was different."
Haren and Vargas then intensified the velocity of their fastballs, both disallowing the respective teams’ offence to play with ease. Just when the score remained tied till the fifth inning, Brendan Ryan hit a sacrifice fly to score the tiebreaking run for
the Mariners.
While Jason Vargas kept pitching effectively until the bottom of the sixth inning, the seventh proved a harbinger of change for the Angeles. Vernon Wells hit a homer in the seventh inning to not only reverse the Mariners’ lead but also give a safe 5-3 lead
to the Angels.
Vargas was relieved in the eighth inning. Rich Thompson and Scott Downs threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Angels. However, as Chris Ray replaced Pauley in the middle of ninth inning, Bobby Abreu singled to centre to take the score to 6-3
for the Angels.
In what was indeed a worth watching feat, Jordan Walden pitched an effective shut-out ninth inning to win the game for Los Angeles Angels 6-3.
