Veronica Campbell-Brown stuns spectators at the 2011 Supreme Ventures Jamaican Championships
Jamaican track and field sprinter, Veronica Campbell-Brown, left her spectators stunned after she marked a spell binding performance on the fourth day of the 2011 Supreme Ventures Jamaican Championships. The meet was held on Sunday, June 26, 2011.
Veteran sprinter from Jamaica, Steve Mullings, who specialises in 100m and 200m meets, emerged as title holder of the event.
Mullings, the 28-year old runner had kicked-off with his international career while participating in the Pan American Junior Championships, where a stellar performance helped him earn a bronze medal. However, it was only back in 2004 when he succeeded in
making an impact among senior rivals, where for both 100 and 200m runs, he clocked his personal bests of 10.04 and 20.22 seconds.
The results culminated in making him emerge as a national champion and earned him a qualification for the 2004 Summer Olympics. However, he was found positive for a banned substance and was denied an entrance to the prestigious event.
Appearing at this season’s Jamaican Championships, Mullings finished the race in 20.10 seconds, just behind Nickel Ashmeade, who was the first athlete to mark a sub 20-seconds for a 200m run and cross the finishing line in 20.32 seconds in the event. Mario
Forsythe claimed third position on the podium, after he who clocked a time of 20.37 seconds.
Looking rather satisfied over his win, Mullings expressed his feelings over the success and said, “I am very satisfied, this is my best ever performance at the National Championships, considering the field I went up against in both sprints. I am feeling
good, just really sore, but I am glad I was able to come out here and get this victory without having another cramp like in the 100m, so I am really pleased.”
Campbell-Brown, on the other hand, is a five-time Olympic medallist and the reigning Olympic champion for the 200m run. The performance she displayed at the Jamaican Championships was rather expected of her. In fact, the 29-year old runner is habitual of
marking world-class performances. Back in 2008, while appearing in the Beijing Olympics, she clocked a time for the 200m in 21.74 seconds, which was the fastest effort in a decade’s period. Moreover, the win at the Beijing Olympics also made her the second
fastest woman in the history of the discipline, after Germany’s Barbel Wockel.
For claiming her title in Sunday’s contest, Campbell-Brown stopped the clock in 22.44 seconds. Kerron Stewart, who was her closest rival, finished just behind her as she marked a time of 22.63 seconds. The third position was claimed by Sherone Simpson, who
crossed the finishing line in 22.73 seconds.
